ATE 308 "Emesser" – the clip-on figure-8

The Emesser ATE 308 is a very compact condenser microphone with a figure-8 polar pattern. It turns any boom microphone into an M/S stereo system – inside your existing windshield. Without changing your setup, you can add some depth to dialogue, record room tone deliberately or capture ambient sound in pristine stereo – whatever microphone you are using.

The true small-diaphragm condenser capsule and high-quality components deliver a dynamic and frequency range that is up to demanding ambience recordings as well. The Emesser runs on 48 V phantom power.

Seamlessly from mono to stereo

Because you record ambience and dialogue in M/S with the same main microphone, seamless transitions from mono to stereo are possible without any change in the sound. For a stereo image with as much depth as possible, the frequency response is matched to the typical sound of a shotgun microphone addressed from the side, with attenuated low-frequency content.

The result is a natural-sounding stereo image with excellent localization, minimal out-of-phase content in the low frequency range and good suppression of handling noise.

Developed from the ATE 208

Compared with its predecessor, the ATE 208, we combined the preamp design of our Soundfish hydrophones with a redesigned capsule. The result is a warm, natural sound with the perceived noise floor reduced by more than half.

On its own or as a set

The ATE 308 Set includes everything you need for the conversion: the Rycote clip that holds the Emesser on your boom microphone, the Y connection cable with a standard 5-pin XLR output, a foam windshield and a bag. This is an economical way to go stereo while you keep using your boom microphone, mount and windshield.
